Irlen Coloured Lenses
This boy was asked to copy "I love Mummy". The first effort (at top) is without his Irlen coloured lenses. On the second attempt (at bottom) he copied "I love Mummy" whilst wearing his Irlen coloured lenses. Can you now imagine how difficult it would be to learn how to spell when affected by this condition?
Part of the puzzle - how they help.
Irlen lenses may improve reading comfort, speed, comprehension and duration. They can improve accuracy if distortions are severe, but they can't allow children to read words not within their vocabulary. Irlen lenses can reduce strain, fatigue, migraine, headaches and glare. They can improve confidence, self esteem, and judgement of distance.
The other parts of the puzzle - how teachers can help.
Preferred style of learning - usually kinesthetic and auditory. Narrow visual span means, the whole word method doesn't work; word attack, decoding skills, comprehension skills, bi-lateral co-ordination, ball skills etc.
