Can a musical combine an adrenalin-filled ride of emotions, stunning visual affects, beautiful costumes and amazing music? Yes, yes, yes and yes!
Any musical lover knows the first few notes to The Phantom of the Opera. The organ, the urgency and the emotion are used for dramatic effect at the beginning of the performance, signalling Phantom is unlike any other musical. Strong words, but there is good reason why it's still being performed more than 21 years after it first opened in London. At 7 486 performances, it is the longest running show on Broadway. It has filled 80 million seats worldwide, selling more than $3.2 billion worth of ticket sales.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's now famous take on the disfigured anti-hero was first introduced to the stage in 1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. With Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine, the show was an instant hit and has since graced stages from Las Vegas to Budapest.
Anthony Warlow reprises the role as the Phantom in this Australian production. Although he had only played the character for a year prior to this current run, it is actually the role he is most known for - some even go so far as to say Anthony Warlow is the Phantom. His performance of Music of the Night will bring you to tears. Also starring Ana Marina as Christine and Alex Lewis as Raoul, this dark and mournful story of a deformed maestro who wreaks havoc on those who have cast his genius aside, is a must see. For more information go to the Phantom website. Bookings at Ticketmaster.
