The legacy of one of Australia's most colourful prime ministers lives on in Casey Bennetto's Keating! In a satirical musical format, Bennetto follows the rise and fall of Paul Keating, Australian prime minister from 1991 to 1996. Utilising the language and antics for which the Labor party mogul was renowned, Keating! portrays the man and his mission in a celebration of song and dance.

Premiering at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2005, Keating! cleaned up at the awards ceremony and has barely stopped for breath since. Sold out shows in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Darwin and a prestigious Helpmann Award have made tickets to this Australian musical as rare as an honest politician. Luckily for you, Bennetto intends to tour her show until every Australian has had a chance to experience the combination of comedy, tragedy and Australian history.

The cheeky production parodies the political figures of the Keating era with John Howard, Bob Hawke, John Hewson and Alexander Downer all dropping by the banana republic. Paul Keating stood for Aboriginal rights, republicanism and strong Australian values. Not only does Keating! provide a laugh at numerous people's expense, it also zeroes in on Australia's values and how we have evolved as a nation.

RobertG Christie: Great! God bless musicians! Though sober truths need emphasis so as to enhance benefits more comprehensively. (Not overlooking the need to acknowledge the fulness of truth: in spirit and in truth.) (01 August 2008)
