Sydney

Last year the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival raised over half a million dollars for charities like The Heart Foundation, Osteoporosis Australia, Cure Cancer Australia, The Cancer Council, The ING Foundation plus many more worthwhile causes.

As the figure in 2008 once again approaches the half a million mark, organisers of the event are now hoping that their little twist or incentive can bring that figure closer to the magic million! But how is this possible? Well they’ve put out the challenge for runners, walkers or strollers to commit to raising a certain amount of funds for their charity! And the benefit? Ok, how does receiving a rebate on your entry fee sound?

So whether you’re in this thing for a leisurely run as part of the The Sunday Telegraph Family  4km Fun Run, or keen on The Sunday Telegraph body and soul Bridge Run 9km stretch, you can run for free just as long as you hit the fundraising targets of $233 and $333 respectively. Come on, surely you can achieve this and raise your hard earned for a crack at a free run around the Sydney Harbour Bridge, before finishing at the Sydney Opera House?

For the more willing and diehard running enthusiast, this years Blackmores Sydney Marathon (42.2km) $900 and Blackmores Half Marathon (21.1km) $533, provide a challenge to behold. Not only for the monetary amounts needed to hit the fundraising targets, but also for the enormity of the races - endurance levels need to be in overdrive for these monster events!

Always attracting a large number of international competitors along with the cream of Australia’s long distance running champions, this year the Aussie contingent will be trying in vain to run down Kenya’s Julius Maritim. The Kenyan has won the event for the past three years, breaking the marathon record in 2007 with a fireball time of 02:14:38!

Extraordinary feats accomplished by the Kenyan – be there to see who can track this masterful running man down in 2008!

Online entries close Friday 19 September at 5pm. Late entries will be taken at EventRegistration from Monday 15 to Saturday 20 September. Visit http://www.sydneymarathon.org or www.runthebridge.com.au for opening times and all further details about the race!
