The picturesque surrounds of Australia's finest vineyards play host to this popular annual music, food and wine event. As the sun descends on an afternoon of sumptuous food and wine, 2008's Opera in the Vineyards presents the Top 20 hits of opera, featuring favourites from some of the world's greatest operas including La Boheme, Madama Butterfly and Turandot.
Under the direction of highly respected maestro Andrew Greene, Opera in the Vineyards features some of the international stage's brightest stars. The Top 20 hits of opera stars Australian soprano Deborah Riedel, who has appeared in Maria Stuarda, Turandot and Tosca and performed with the New York Philharmonic and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Yugoslavian-born Milijana Nikolic, whose work with Opera Australia includes performances in Suor Angelica, Rusalka and Il Trovatore appears as Opera in the Vineyard's mezzo singer.
Riedel and Nikolic are joined on stage by regular guest soloist with Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestra Rosario La Spina. La Spina has also performed extensively overseas, including an appearance alongside Placido Domingo and Olga Borodina in Samson and Delilah. Baritone Andrew Jones makes his Opera in the Vineyards debut, adding to performances with Orchestra Victoria and several OzOpera appearances, including Carmen and La Boheme.
In 2008, Opera in the Vineyards takes place for the first time in Victoria's Balgownie Estate on the banks of the Yarra River. The concert returns to Hunter Valley's historic Wyndham Estate for the following perfomance.
