Editorial Review
Libertine is Sydney's answer to Melbourne. Situated in Kellet Street, Kings Cross, its setting gives it a lingering sense of Sydney naughtiness and a whiff of the Cross's shadier past (Kellet Street is famous for its once booming brothel industry). Ducking in off the street patrons are welcomed by a charming little cocktail bar, furnished with a mixture of Eastern and Western decor; a large golden gong hangs over an antique fireplace and an Asian inspired chandelier hangs above a large marble column.
The drinks list at Libertine reflects the Vietnamese-French fusion style of the restaurant, with a large range of French and new world wines available. The cocktail list offers all the old favourites, zhoozhed up with French liqueurs and unusual Asian ingredients. But what really gives Libertine its edge is its cosy, boutique style atmosphere.
Bars of this ilk are a rare breed indeed in Sydneytown, with Melbourne long considered the trailblazer when it comes to stylish drinking venues. NSW licensing laws have been much stricter than Victorian ones, but with any luck Sydney will soon give Melbourne a run for its money if more places like Libertine pop up around town.
