Editorial Review
Thank God for Tonic Lounge. Nestled in the tangled purlieus of Sydney's Kings Cross, this grand Victorian Terrace houses an oasis; a twilight burgundy of dimpled velvet couches, deep-set armchairs, dark red walls and wine-coloured lamplight. Stepping through the dark timber doorframe is like slinking into the funkified soul of a speakeasy. There is absolutely no reason not to settle in. And anyway, once the music hits those Persian carpets you'll soon be ensconced.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights all see Guest DJs coming from around the world to spin their decks in Tonic's lounge room. Unpretentious dance-floor soul, rare-grooves and a fresh mix of electronica ruffle the tassels and fill the floor. By midnight the house is brimming with revellers attracted to the friendly vibe. The staff seem equally happy to be there. Punters spiral around the staircase to the second floor, where a wonderful boudoir is banked full of shabby chaise lounges and bubbling conversation.
The bar by the staircase holds some true wonders, namely, there are thirty beers to choose from. Cuban Cristal? Polish Zyviec? Red Stripe, perhaps? Tequila is also a speciality of the house, from the earthy Revolucionario to the loftier summit of 100% blue agave Casa Noble. Naturally, cocktails are also popular. This is like being plum centre of a good party, and a welcome change from the blandness that glazes the imagination of many a gaudy nightspot. As a result, it has yet another early morning devotee.
