Editorial Review

Every RSL seems to have a major carpet issue - anyone who visited an airport in the '70s will understand where all those revolting old carpets went. Even without questionable carpets, many RSLs are doing it tough these days. Not only are they deemed responsible for corrupting the nation through gambling (you would be shocked to learn how much tax the government takes off that revenue, while soundly condemning gambling with one of their other faces), but the traditional demographic is, somewhat sadly, changing. There aren't so many returned servicemen these days, and many clubs are having to adapt or die.

Happily, @Newtown is at the forefront of what one hopes will be a revival of a splendid and ultimately noble institution. New management has just rolled in and already things (other than the carpet) are moving and shaking. Some of the pokies have gone, replaced by the far more civilized Poker Nights upstairs, the food is being revamped and the beer is still astoundingly cheap. In place of Elton John impressionists new young bands are coming in and (just for now) it's free entertainment - catch the next big thing for pretty much nothing!

At the least, this is a great place to start an evening and oil up cheaply; and getting some homely food through the cakehole might also be a good idea. At best, you can catch some quality entertainment and say 'I knew them when …' in a few year's time, while, of course, you indirectly support your community. This last part may not seem cool, but check out the new gym at your kid brother's school or enjoy that free street festival - more than likely a club will have come up with the goods. Think of this, and you can almost forgive the carpet.
