Editorial Review

Perth is the new Seattle. We're not sure what it is about the west coast, but it seems to be a breeding ground for hugely talented bands. Eskimo Joe and Sleepy Jackson are the first ones to come to mind, but there are another dozen bands floating around the west coast that could be just as big. Is the air different out there? Is it some kinda freak coincidence? Or maybe it's because the place is so isolated? Whatever the case, Perth has an abundance of talented bands and Birds of Tokyo are the latest to join that distinguished list.

The band got their start in 2004 and had released two EPs within the space of about a year. They followed that up with 2007's debut LP, Day One, which had Rolling Stone magazine short-listing them as Artists to Watch. Voters at that year's Western Australian Music Industry Awards agreed; the group picked up Favourite Newcomer and Best Male Vocalist. They were also nominated for two Australian Independent Recording Association (AIR) awards.

Keeping that momentum going, Birds of Tokyo have now released their second album, Universes. Arriving almost a year since the debut, the release went straight into the ARIA Top Five - landing at number three in its opening week. Silhouettic, the first single, was released as a digital download in April and obviously helped shift some units. With a second single about to be launched, Birds of Tokyo are currently making their way around the country.

Cassie: Birds of Tokyo are real... Their music speaks for itself... something refreshing in the sometimes fake and pretentious music scene they have to deal with on a regular basis. (25 July 2008)

Cassie: You have it all! Real music which appeals to "real people"... find the music scene fake at times but you have changed this notion. (25 July 2008)
