Editorial Review
Wasavie enjoys something like cult status in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Those in the know talk of it reverently in hushed tones, simultaneously proud to behold such treasured knowledge and at the same time loathe to share it. The subject of all this whispering is a cosy room located in Paddington's Five Ways which is filled with a large communal table seating 24 lucky diners. With BYO and a bottle shop next door, the table holds nifty sunken ice buckets to keep your bubbly and vino cold. The space is elegantly decorated and the polite and friendly service is just what you expect of a good Japanese restaurant.Despite its trendy vibe, it is really the food that people come for. The sushi and sashimi is sliced and diced from premium quality fish and the freshness is palpable. There are also edamame beans to start, a delicious salad made with teriyaki-marinated chicken pieces, crispy tempura, beef tataki, gorgeous gyoza and melt-in-your-mouth pork belly. The glass dessert (a parfait of sliced strawberries, wasabi-flavoured custard, a layer of ginger-infused jelly, a scoop of black sesame ice-cream and a black sesame-studded tuile) is creative and delicious. Wasavie doesn't take bookings so be prepared to have a drink down the road at the Royal while waiting for a table on Friday and Saturday nights.

edoow: Went there on a weekend and had a table outside. The plastic chair was not comfy and the table was wobbly. We didn't get any attention from the wait staff for nearly 15 minutes although I noticed a waitress was just standing near the cash register. Finally the waiter came out with the menu. I asked for water and we didn't get it until the food were served. For entree, we ordered, te-maki (sushi hand roll), which came out of shape. The nori (sea weed wrap), was soft and gummy. It should be crispy and even the shari (sushi rice) didn't have that vinegar taste. We ordered the 2 mains from their specials which were both disappointing. The salmon cooked with miso (saikyo) tasted very ordinary and the seafood cooked in a paper bag (kamitufu), lacking in flavour. The few pieces of fish that were floating in the paper bag, were incorrectly described as kingfish when in fact were snapper. I also ordered a bowl of rice which was entirely forgotten by the waiter.
