Fish Face

Editorial Review

Possibly the hippest fish and chip spot in Sydney, this tiny space is always packed with rowdy patrons enjoying great seafood in myriad combinations.

Editorial Review

It does look a little like a fish and chip shop, with its narrow dining room and long stainless steel counter flanked with bar stools, but with such a flash-looking display kitchen, you know Fish Face are doing something special with their fish. Here you can watch the fish not only being deep-fried, but grilled, roasted, poached or sliced into sushi. There's room for none-too-many in the teensy, frequently noisy dining room, but there are a few outdoor tables and a takeaway service.

If you don't need your seafood cooked, start with the ultra-fresh sashimi plate, or the rock oysters with mignonette sauce and rye bread. Vegetarians could opt for the steamed asparagus, poached egg, parmesan and nut butter for entree. The bug salad with basil, shaved baby fennel and watercress is another impressive starter. For mains - yes, you can have your fish and chips with lashings of lemon and tartare, but there is a range of other excellent dishes including steamed bass groper with preserved lemon and snap peas, and blue eye on potato scales with beetroot and bacon vinaigrette. Bring along a crisp white or a light red and enjoy the BYO service. Corkage is $4.50 per person.
