Editorial Review

Steeped in history, even if it weren’t for the recent addition of the tearooms Gunners Barracks would be worth a visit. Perched atop Georges Head and commanding spectacular 270 degree views of Sydney Harbour, the Barracks were built in 1873 as part of Sydney’s outer line of defence. The tearooms, which reside in the former officer’s mess, now make a visit to these fortified buildings nigh on mandatory. The dining room, with its Florence Broadhurst-papered walls, is filled with antique furniture and decor sourced specifically to suit the venue’s heritage.

Recline in a perfectly restored and surprisingly comfortable antique armchair and indulge in a spot of morning or afternoon tea with a selection of perfect cakes, pastries and finger sandwiches arranged on a three-tiered silver tray. If high tea isn’t your thing then don’t despair, choose instead from the tempting a la carte lunch menu with dishes like walnut-crusted scotch fillet served with celery, fig and blue cheese polenta, or poached blue eye with spiced lentils, asparagus and hollandaise. Open for lunch everyday, the tearooms are closed in the evening for functions where lucky guests get to take advantage of the spectacular evening views from the outdoor balcony. Call ahead or check their website for exact opening times.
