Once upon a time, taking the family to Chinese restaurants was the penultimate dining out experience for the bourgeoisie Australian – who didn’t relate to those scenes in Muriel’s Wedding set at the local far-eastern, when the dishes used to be a lot less exotic than what they are today. Chinese became ill-favoured when people started to discover South East Asian cuisine such as Thai and Vietnamese; however, it is undergoing a kind of renaissance these days, with top quality restaurants such as Melbourne’s Flower Drum reinventing the cuisine and forcing diners to give it another shot; Flower Drum itself has been nominated as one of the top fifty restaurants in the world. Various other restaurants have concentrated on particular regions of China, such as Shanghai, Peking and Szechuan, to bring you the best flavours from that particular area. And of course, the best way to be adventurous and sample a wide range of Chinese food is to have Yum Cha. You won’t find a single glutinous, psychedelically-coloured lemon chicken or sweet-and-sour dish in sight!
