Editorial Review
I drank my first great cup of coffee in Darlinghurst; creamy milk, the coffee not burnt or bitter and perfect drinking temperature when it arrived at the table. Dieter was the man behind the coffee machine, and while he is no longer at Eca Bar, everything that made that first experience so fantastic can now be found in his cafe in Cremorne. Oven, a garage in its previous life, is a long and narrow room with bi-folding doors at the entrance, a large circular skylight and an eclectic array of ornaments lining the wall.
The coffee isn’t the only thing that will induce déjà vu to those familiar with Dieter’s old digs. Tried and true favourites such as the bran, apricot and sultana loaf, googy (soft boiled) eggs with toast soldiers, and sauteed mushrooms and spinach on toast appear on the menu. There are salads and freshly prepared sandwiches for lunch and a variety of small cakes and friands on display – the rich chocolate cupcake with a rainbow of large sprinkles is straight out of your childhood dreams. And after all that it’s probably time for another cup of coffee …
