Editorial Review

In the tradition of Arrested Development comes 30 Rock, a comedy with a hilarious ensemble cast and laugh-out-loud plots, a comedy that's so strong out of the gate that it earned the Emmy for best comedy in its first season.

If you missed it on TV because it was jammed into a late-night timeslot, more than 12 months after it premiered in the States, then here's your chance. Why did we had to wait so long for this comedic gem?

Saturday Night Live's Tina Fey plays Liz Lemon, head writer on an eccentric sketch comedy called The Girlie Show. Starring Liz's best friend Jenna (Jane Krakowski), The Girlie Show is a modest success - the first skit we see is titled "Pam, The Overly Confident Morbidly Obese Woman", which paints a pretty good picture of the show's humour.

Enter Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), a ruthless network executive who thinks The Girlie Show needs a shake-up. He hires madcap movie star Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) - who rants to Liz that he's "straight-up mentally ill" - to be the show's new star, much to the horror of Liz, Jenna and the writing team.

Featuring some fantastic performances and laden with background jokes, 30 Rock is an absolute delight.
