Editorial Review
What an amazingly flexible format Doctor Who has. One week, it's an action thriller with aliens invading Earth, the next it's pure science fiction and DNA replicators, and then it's a murder mystery set in 1920's England! And it all works! The TARDIS lands the Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna (Catherine Tate) on the grounds of an English estate, and in the middle of a garden party being held by Lady Clemency Eddison (Felicity Kendal). Her guest of honour is Agatha Christie (Fenella Woolgar), and with both Christie and The Doctor involved, murder is not far away.
With a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek take on the standard 'whodunnit' cliches (country estates, vicars, cars, fashion, and the British upper class), this episode gives Tennant and Tate - and the impressive guest cast - the opportunity to flex their comedy muscles, and their little grey cells. It's not often Doctor Who goes as blatantly comedic as it does here - look out for Agatha Christie titles littered throughout the dialogue - but it's a refreshing mid-season breather, especially given the rest of the season looks to be heading into much darker territory.
Doctor Who: The Unicorn and the Wasp airs on ABC1 on Sunday, 17 August, at 7.30pm.
