Editorial Review

Channel Nine will soon be changing its daytime schedule, dropping midday movies in favour of US talk shows The View and Ellen.

In the game of demographics and advertisers it's important for Nine to deliver some consistency, but with movies it's a bit of a dog's breakfast as to who is watching. By putting in regular programs, Nine can offer its advertisers more consistency.

The View currently screens on the W Channel at 11:10am where Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd dissect topical news, chat to celebrities and debate all that is Americana. While the W Channel retains first-air rights, Nine benefits from a much bigger free to air audience.

Ellen, hosted of course by newlywed Ellen de Generes, currently screens on the WIN-owned Nine affiliates in Perth and Adelaide. It will follow The View at 1pm around the remainder of the country.

Having two chat shows will pit this double against the might of TEN's Dr. Phil and The Oprah Winfrey Show - both of which are regular timeslot winners. Nine has obviously smelled the scent of victory in daytime talk and it wants a slice of the action. Going head to head may ultimately benefit Seven if the audience becomes divided.

Buying the US shows is a much cheaper solution than when Nine tried it's own The Catch Up last year. That show was a mess from beginning to end for a variety of reasons. The most obvious one, casting notwithstanding, was the fact that everybody knew it was a blatant copy of The View. While we had to sit through that, pay television viewers were watching Rosie O'Donnell tear shreds off her co-panellist Elisabeth Hasselbeck and dissing Donald Trump, too. That's television!

The View and Ellen join Nine from Monday, 8 September.

Louise: Barbara who gave her opinion on ADD has no idea what ADD is, like a lot of ignorant people, with her joke she mentioned depressed and tired. Those adjectives are not the sypmtons of ADD they are years of frustration of not being able to concentrate long enough and this is caused because a chemical is missing from the brain. There is the odd number who choose to abuse this behavioural problem but not all is as simple as go outside and play for the ADD child. (09 September 2008)
