Editorial Review
Who would have thought that a bogan musical would hit the spot? Where cheesy comedy has left a void, Bogan Pride has surely filled it. Rebel Wilson, best known for her roles in Pizza, The Wedge and Monster House, has created and stars in a comedy that strikes a chord with the inner bogan in all of us.
Wilson plays Jennie Cragg, an overweight teenager who is bullied at her school, Boonelg High. Beyond school, Jennie's home life is as sad as her family is dysfunctional. Her mother, Berenice (Sally Anne Upton) is so obese she can't be moved from in front of the television and her aunt has been abandoned by her husband.
In this episode, Jennie's mother is rendered immobile after a supposed spider bite. However upon further investigation from the family doctor, it's not the bite that is the issue, it's the fact that she is morbidly obese. So with the help of her two best friends and the God's Love Society, Jennie attempts to help her mother lose weight.
Although its title doesn't suggest quality viewing, the mixture of storytelling and entertaining musical numbers make this series surprisingly enjoyable. Be prepared for brash comedy in the vein of Summer Heights High though, as laughs are attained through simple jokes and crude humour. Bogan Pride is a must watch for those who are bogans at heart.
Bogan Pride airs on SBS on Monday, October 13, at 9pm.
